Spring 2013 Anime Line-up! Tenchi Picks!

Hello there my lovely readers! Almost all the Winter 2013 animes are done or wrapping up and I have yet to post my list of maybes for the Spring 2013 anime season. Such a lazy slacker! What to do with me?! Well I better get to it before things start airing and I fall behind before things start.

Spring already?
This season I will really, really, REALLY try to stay current and maybe trying something new. That thing called dropping animes when they get boring or dumb. I think I have said this before about 5 times but maybe this time it will stick. XD It's like quitting smoking, I can't blog on time and drop boring shows cold turkey. On the 15th time I will get it...maybe. XD On with the list.

Suisei no Gargantia

So what is the twist?!

Synopsis: The story begins in the distant future in the far reaches of the galaxy. The Human Galactic Alliance has been constantly fighting for its survival against a grotesque race of beings called "Hidiaazu." During an intense battle, the young lieutenant Redo and his humanoid mobile weapon Chamber are swallowed up into a distortion of time and space. Waking from his artificially induced hibernation, Redo realizes that he has arrived on Earth, the planet on the lost frontier. On this planet that was completely flooded by the seas, people live in fleets of giant ships, salvaging relics from the seas' depths in order to survive. Redo arrives on one of the fleets called Gargantia. With no knowledge of the planet's history or culture, he is forced to live alongside Amy, a 15-year-old girl who serves as a messenger aboard the Gargantia fleet. To Redo, who has lived a life where he knows nothing but fighting, these days of peace continue to surprise him.

Now...I usually don't pick animes based on who made them but this season I have TWO such shows. Crazy I know. But Gen Urobuchi has been pretty good at creating shows that end in a WTF kind of way. Or at least the reveals within the shows are WTF. The shows themselves might end in questionable ways but the ride along the way seems decent enough. So while this might seem like a typical oh no, the world has been destroyed but the people who are left are happy and making the best of life type shows...it probably won't end that way. Redo will be all happy with the peace and fall in love with Amy but then something TERRIBLE will happen and it will be amazing. Or you know....this could be The Lady in the Water. I shall see what this show is all about and hope for The Village.

Arata Kangatari

 photo springanime3_zpsb8bc215f.jpg
Which one is the pretend Princess? X__X
Synopsis: Every 30 years, a new princess is chosen from the Hime family to serve the Hayagami. The time has come again, but over these past years, records state not a single female has been born, save for one, the 15-year-old Arata. The only problem is, Arata is actually a male! Forced to disguise himself and take the place of the princess candidate until a formal one can be found, he attends the festival only to witness the current princess, Kokuri-hime, murdered, and his own life is forfeit as well, by the hands of the princess' personal guard, the 12 Shinshou. As he runs for his life, Kannagi of the 12 convinces everyone that Arata is the one who has murdered the princess instead, and now everyone in the Imperial Court is after his head! Airing Date: April 8th Number of Episodes: Unknown The second of the two shows on my list that I picked based on who created it. Yuu Watase....I thought you had left me! I think I have been into anime and manga for a million years but I am pretty sure that Fushigi Yuugi and X/1999 showed me that there was another world outside of Sailor Moon. So Yuu Watase holds a special place in my heart. At first glance this show looks like it is about a bunch of pretty people doing pretty things yes? A lot like Fushigi Yuugi. But I did a little more research and found this synopsis is really the cliff notes version of what is going on. XD And maybe it is more like Fushigi Yuugi, as there is some present day stuff going on. With reading that this show seemed more interesting so on the list it must go. I mean....sometimes you watch things based on previous works. Reputation yes?

 Karneval

So much sparkle!

Synopsis: Nai searches for someone important to him, with only an abandoned bracelet as a clue. Gareki steals and pick-pockets to get by from day to day. The two meet in a strange mansion where they are set-up, and soon become wanted criminals by military security operatives. When Nai and Gareki find themselves desperate in a hopeless predicament, they encounter none other than the country's most powerful defense organization, "Circus". The Circus is a Defense organization that works for the government. They perform raids to capture criminals and solve crimes that the Security force otherwise cannot handle. After their raids, they put on shows as an apology for scaring the citizens. Their group consists of the strongest, most capable fighters that use a special type of bracelet, known as Circus I.D., to fight.

I...have no idea what I just read. No really let me read this again so I can better understand what is going on.

Okay so.....two random people who are pretty different end up working for some secret police force that hold a circus after each criminal capture because citizens have seen the horrors? I see. This anime has been recommended to me so I will watch it. People seem to know my taste so there must be more than meets the eye. Or maybe I like general chaos and crazy (as long as it has some sort of logic XD) so maybe this all will make sense once it plays out on the screen. Plus I like pretty things. I mean...I just watched a police show that had to do with BRAINS. Surely this one will be entertaining yes?

 Shingeki no Kyojin

 photo springanime2_zps002a83d9.jpg
Behold the amazingness.

Synopsis: Several hundred years ago, humans were nearly exterminated by giants. Giants are typically several stories tall, seem to have no intelligence, devour human beings and, worst of all, seem to do it for the pleasure rather than as a food source. A small percentage of humanity survived by walling themselves in a city protected by extremely high walls, even taller than the biggest of giants. Flash forward to the present and the city has not seen a giant in over 100 years. Teenage boy Elen and his foster sister Mikasa witness something horrific as the city walls are destroyed by a super giant that appears out of thin air. As the smaller giants flood the city, the two kids watch in horror as their mother is eaten alive. Elen vows that he will murder every single giant and take revenge for all of mankind.

Okay so...I read this synopsis and was like yes put this on the list. Then I went to search for a picture to put with my post and all the manga pictures came up. Putting aside that the art is pretty ugly....um....yeah. This makes The Walking Dead look like cupcakes and rainbows. Yes the mother is eaten alive. And many other people. Many other people!

Why do I know this? Because....okay here is why I never blog ANYTHING on time. Because believe it or not this was supposed to be posted hours ago as well as Tamako Market episode 12. But I haven't even written that yet. Because I looked up the manga for this show and was pretty horrified by the awfulness. I walked away....but then came back and decided to read the first chapter to see what it was all about. Then the second....THEN ALL OF THEM! Because that is how insane I am. Like this totally sucks, I am going to read it all so I can know for a fact it sucks.

Let me just say that the manga that is still ongoing is 4x chapters into the madness and the meat of it is STILL not known. Like in Madoka terms we don't even know that magical girls are witches kinda information. I am not sure when this manga will wrap up but CLEARLY the anime is going to be multiple seasons because hello the main issue has not even been discussed yet. So will I watch this show as everyone other character gets eaten....I am not sure yet. I need to think about it. Think think.

RDG: Red Data Girl

 photo springanime_zps7a86f6f3.jpg
She isn't going to be amazed with...people and busy streets right?

Synopsis: A modern fantasy based on Japanese Shinto legends. Suzuhara Izumiko is a 15-year-old girl, who has been raised and protected in a shrine deep in the Kumano mountains. She is quite shy and destroys all the electric devices she touches. When she begins to think about going out of the mountains and moving to the city, her guardian Sagara Yukimasa recommends her to enter a high school in Tokyo and forces his son Miyuki to serve Izumiko for life. Miyuki and Izumiko repel each other but their relationship begins to change when a terrifying accident occurs on the school excursion. Izumiko learns her fate as the last representative (yorishiro) of a Himegami goddess and Miyuki learns of his duty as a guardian Yamabushi of Izumiko.

This one I am really on the fence about. I have been burned by Potato Princess and Playing Card Nobody. So my little feelers are up at the idea of a girl being someone special and there is a guardian at play. Of course that does describe a great deal of animes I have watched before and mostly enjoyed but you know. Is the electrical devices exploding enough to keep me interested? She does seem pretty cute and I like cute people/things. But what if she is too...sheltered and that becomes annoying? This sounds like it could be generic. I must give it a few episodes to find out what it is all about I suppose.

Hello @Christina

I'm really glad that you decided to blog about Arata! :)

I really hope that show is good and not a disappointment like some.

I don't know about the horror manga with giants. I think it relies too much on graphic violence to draw the viewers in like Blood-C and the artwork is indeed disturbing.

The other shows are marginally interesting, but I'm more concerned with Arata. Again, I hope it won't be a disappointment.

End comments

I'd say 'NO" to Shingeki no Kyojin. Tenchi, be realistic, a show w/ multi-seasons, really, dear, you know you have no time for this.

Red Data Girl, I watch the 1st 3 eps and it is down right boring to me, so I won't recomend it. :(

Tenchi, I think the 1st 3 will be enough for you this season, and anymore you will fall behind, and pertty bad too.

Agree with Anonymous 1, I am also glad that you decide to blog Arata, the manga is still outgoing, but the content is AWSOME! and hilarious, as expeacted from Yuu-sensei. ^^

I read "Karneval" too, and I enjoy it. Unlike "Arata"(the anime character designs look fairly different from Watase’s original ones), "Karneval" is made/draw by its originator. There’s also something about this kind of series (at least to me)– where it takes themes from stories we associate with our childhood and warps them into something more twisted and surreal. I really hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Red Another Girl is another anime that I am going to call 'shit'. Please. Please don't waste your time on it.

On the other hand, I am really glad too that they make another anime adaptation of Watase Yuu's manga. Most manga which are translated to Indonesian and I read in the past, are made by her. I really like that particular one, with the main character accidentally buying a sex doll with the form of bishounen robot. What is it again? Oh yeah. Zettai Kareshi.

BTW, Blood-C's movie is already available out there *cough* illegally. I wonder if you have watched it. I want to know your opinion.

Hello @Christina

First anonymous here again.

I agree with 2nd/3rd anonymous:

I think it's less stress/better time management if you just blog about the first three shows on your list. And forget about Shingeki no Kyojin and the others.

That's all

I read Shingeki no Kyoujin's manga last night. I have read 11 chapters so far. It's certainly a good manga. But it's too shounen and mainstream for my taste...
The characters are mostly smelly guys, even the girl behaves like a guy. Oh yeah, it's only natural considering the situation they are in,

Karneval only has 13 episodes? *sad*

Anonymous- XD Sometimes people really know you. XD I am so glad I was told who created Arata or I might have had to think about it more. Sometimes I don't understand people when they say they pick animes based on the company/people who put it on but now I can see what they mean. XD

Not only is it graphic half the time I had no idea who the people were because they looked so similar. Like in one of the last chapters that has been released currently a big thing is revealed and I was like...wait I know you?! That is how similar they look.

Anonymous 2- Was Red Data Girl released early or something? I saw two dates for it and I was like...no this March date must be wrong.

I think if I get too overwhelmed or bored I will be more inclined to drop shows. My friends, the husband, and I have decided that we need to spend more time together. Which doesn't mean blogging isn't important, it just means it would be a little later. But if 5 gets too much or if I start barfing over giants eating people or boring shrine girls put me to sleep I will try and drop shows and focus on the few that do interest me.

Anonymous 3- As long as it doesn't twist childhood stories too much I will check it out. Still upset over the awful Alice in Wonderland remake that came out a few years ago. Just no.

If things get too busy for me I will either drop shows or maybe I could even blog shorter entries? Try that BEING BRIEF thing? XD

Eternia- I don't think I have anything planned for Sunday (but Monday will be a day trip to the zoo yay) so hopefully I can download the long movie on Saturday and watch it Sunday. Blood C- The Last Fail. XD Thanks for the info.

From the sounds of it no one is liking Red Data Girl. Are we talking Potato Princess here or Amnesia what what Shujinko here?

I read ALL the Shingeki no Kyoujin chapters that were out in one sitting. Thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head. Luckily there is no titan around. I really can't see how the anime can even come close to the level of violence which may be a good thing. But given that the main reason for ALL OF THIS happening has just happened 4X chapters in and we really don't know anything yet...I don't know how the anime can be any good. Certainly it will have to have more than one season but without knowing the true reason for what is going on I am not sure that the anime will have good direction. Or make much sense besides young people fighting and getting eating by titans like smile like creepy pedophiles.

Anonymous 4- I think more and more animes are only 13 episodes long. I remember back in the day I would be like um why would I waste my time with 13 episode shows, I need more to stay interested! But now the majority of them start off with 12/13 episodes in case things tank. But that means you don't get as much time with the characters and that could be why it tanks! Le sigh.
