Angel Beats Episode 5

Prepare to be amazed!

This episode was awesome. This series is amazing. I know that Angel Beats was getting a lot of hype even before the series aired and that might turn people off (that the show hadn’t earned the respect and praise yet) but seriously. I think it is safe to say that everyone was right about this show and that is one of the best shows of the season. Unless something drastic happens in the last episode this will be my favorite series of the season. If you are not watching Angel Beats you are missing out. Hurry and catch up now while you are only 2 hours and 5 episodes behind.

Episode Summary: Yuri has decided that they need fight against Tenshi who is bringing out the big guns: exams. Otonashi is a little X_X about the situation but Yuri explains that they are going to make Tenshi fail all her exams so the normal students think less of her and her student council president ability. When some of the members question the importance of this mission Yuri explains that she wants to see if Tenshi is like them, with emotions and the ability to feel bad about the situation. Yuri picks the normal looking members of the SSS to carry out this mission which include Otonashi, Hinata, Takamatsu, Christ, and Oyama.

Very pure love indeed.

Upon entering the classroom only Christ manages to get a seat close enough to Tenshi. He is assigned the duty of taking an extra answer sheet, filling out dumb answers, and switching Tenshi’s paper when one of the other boys are forced to make a distraction. Otonashi gets a little RARW at everyone when it is revealed that no one knows Tenshi’s real name. He stomps out to find out from the teacher’s lounge when Tenshi stops him, concerned that he will miss the exam. They strike up a conversation and it is revealed that her real name is Kanade Tachibana. Yuri is jealous. Throughout the exam the boys are forced to create a distraction for Christ but when they all deem ineffective people (mostly Hinata) go flying into the ceiling instead. Otonashi has to keep creating wild stories up to Tenshi so she doesn’t question their antics. After the exam period Otonashi gets concerned when he sees Tenshi leaving a staff building. Tenshi claims nothing is wrong and walks away.

Tenshi probably needs a hug.

The next day Yuri explains that there are rumors that Tenshi lost her position as class president. This is confirmed the later when there is an assembly making the vice-president Naoki president. Yuri decides to go ahead with operation steal the meal tickets again as Yui being allowed to be the main singer of the band. Otonashi starts getting second thoughts about the mission. When Tenshi arrives on scene he orders everyone not to shoot her and allow her to enter the building. Upon arriving on the concert Tenshi walks over to the food ticket section and purchases something making no attempt to stop the concert. The meal tickets are stolen including Tenshi as Yuri looks on. Later Otonashi gets Tenshi’s meal ticket and is sad that they stole her comfort food she was obviously taking to combat the pain of losing her job. Yuri is upset at the thought that Tenshi might have been just like them but had to create powers to combat the SSS because that was her job as the student council president. The episode ends with Naoki barging into the dining room to take all the SSS members to detention as he is not taking any of their crap as student council president. The end!

Hinata didn’t disappear in this episode woohoo! Although he might wish he had after flying into the ceiling a million times. Hinata is too important to disappear. If he left who would we mock?! Hinata has the ability to make much needed jokes, be the center of everyone else’s jokes, and be a steady shoulder to lean on when things get bad. But mostly we love him because of his reactions to the craziness that is his (dead) life.

Bleh to Christ become a semi-important character. TK gets no lines this episode but Christ is front and center in the mission. I thought we had our resident nerd/smart character in Takamatsu but I guess not. I found him to be slightly boring with his “But please call me Christ line”. He was only important in the mission as he picked the right seat. Shoo fly don’t bother me.

Once again I am not sure if I am totally on board for this mission. Of course that might be my fault for assuming the missions need to be these grand adventures that accomplish something super important. If the point of the SSS group is to annoy Tenshi and make sure that they don’t succumb to disappearing than it is working and the missions are a success. Maybe I should just roll with the punches and enjoy the crazy plans of Yuri. Rain down upon us rain tickets and failing exams.

Missions may be crazy but they get the job done.

I do have to say that even if I don’t think the plans are grand or that the outcome would be life changing the way Yuri plans things out are awesome. Or scary. She pays close attention to details and has back up plans for if (when) her minions fail. She seems to have great insight about what Tenshi might be. I doubt Yuri will totally get everything because I think she is in denial to protect herself but I do think she is smart.

Will jealously be her downfall?

Was it just me or did Yuri seem a little jealous that Otonashi was connecting with Tenshi? I don’t think I will be able to call Tenshi Kanada so I am sticking with Tenshi for now. Anyway yeah jealous Yuri. I don’t think Yuri witnessed anything special between Otonashi and Tenshi but that doesn’t change the fact that she is a teenage girl and they are known for being slightly over dramatic at times. The guy I have no claims to is talking to another girl (the enemy no less!) and it bothers me even though he is doing his job?! Off with his head! Which is strange because I thought Yuri would be the type to punish Otonashi but it was fun seeing Hinata suffer her wrath.

Don't mess with my food!

This episode was designed to garnish sympathy for Tenshi. For some it worked. Probably worked on me as well. I never thought Tenshi was the bad guy to begin with but I also don’t hate the SSS members for attacking her and ruining Tenshi’s plans. I did assume that Tenshi was working for God but it is possible that she was unlike enough to be chosen to carry out his mission by being the student council president. It is likely that she knows something the SSS members don’t and took on this position to help them out rather than Naoki who rather be a bad ass as it were.

Either way I think it is strange that it took Otonashi to see the human side of Tenshi. But if Yuri was the one who woke up first, the one has a grudge against God, it is easy to see how she convinced all the other members that Tenshi was either and had no good side at all. But Otonashi being the savor is a bit expected. He will bridge the gap between the two groups while everyone else wonders why this didn’t happen sooner. I also might feel sorrier for Tenshi if she actually showed some emotions. If she is a real kid I would like to see her upset at all this crap happening to her. Then again she might be doing that to protect the other kids. But I am sure lots of other people out there will make up for the love Tenshi has yet to receive.

Teacher is not amused!

I am not sure what I found funnier during this episode. Takamatsu stripping (and remaining naked during the credits) was pretty random but I enjoyed the flying moments from Hinata. My love isn’t pure indeed!

Them are fighting words!

In the end the SSS members may regret going too far in their plans to ruin Tenshi. Now there is a new sheriff in town and he isn’t going to make things easy. Perhaps that is why Tenshi was the president. If Naoki is a NPC student he doesn’t have the ability to think for himself. Tenshi might have the ability to take care of the SSS members and still have the outward appearance of doing their job. Either way next week the SSS members will get Tenshi her job back. Can’t wait to see that XD It shall be hard to wait until next week but we shall endure.
