Shin Sekai Yori episode 2

Photobucket
Can we get a break down of the fundamental rules? Or at least the definition of the words everyone is using?!
SO SLEEPY! Just going to post this and get to bed. Shall blog more tomorrow unless Daryl and his Walking Dead self distract me. Shin Sekai Yori episode 2 up now. Spoilers for hoping my friends care more if I disappear.

Is it worrisome I see the word delight and think ice cream or treats?
Episode Summary: Sometime…..in sometime the 5th Emperor is declared in front of a huge crowd. The people clap and cheer it what appears to be actual happiness. The new crowned Emperor says the first 100 people who stop clapping will be sacrificed that day. People start turning into little blue balls of flame as they stop clapping. Back in…the time frame with the kids it is seems to be tournament time. Instead of physical contact the kids are to construct a large ball that they will push into a goal (hole) on the ground. They also have to construct a pusher that can’t be attacked during the game and a series of protectors/attackers themselves. They will then face off with another group and take turns defending and trying to score in the least amount of time. Saki and Satoru get into it a little when it comes to designing the objects but Shun manages to keep everyone calm. Match one for our main characters goes by rather easy with Mamoru having to be carried by his team mates. A lot of tension going on with pushing a ball with your mind. While they won rather easily one of their pieces break. Shun and Saki make another piece while the others watch the next match. The others return and report that the favorite to win in fact lost. Saki and the others talk to the team that lost and through their tears explain that their pusher was touched which is against the rules. It was declared an accident but no one really seems to believe that. They warn our main characters to be careful.

People are always finding a way yo cheat. Sad really.
The final match gets underway and Mamoru again struggles to contribute. The opposing team gets very upset when they can’t find the goal. Shun smiles as he made his new piece into a flat rock, covering the hole. The opposing gets pissed but find the hole after a long time. Our main characters then get to work pushing their piece down the field. They are doing a good job until Shun gets a panicked look on his face. Then the pusher is destroyed. Obviously our heroes declare this against the rules and unfair but the teacher decides it was an accident and that they are both the winners. Upset our group of 5 walk home and talk about the rule being broken. Shun says he isn’t as upset about that as he was about being forced to stop. He says that someone else was using their Cantus ability against the rock. It is forbid to use your Cantus ability on something that someone is already controlling as the results could be dangerous. The group identifies the cheater of the group and talk ill about him. That boy Manabu is then seen walking away from his house and his name is stamped with a red mark, the same as Reiko’s at the start of the episode.

Very upsetting news folks!
The kids walk home, talking about the cheating and what not when Saki spots a creature. Several creatures near the water edge. The kids know that they are Queerats but have never seen them before as the animals worship those with Cantus and children do not have Cantus. Queerats sometimes come to the village to work and the like. These particular Queerats are building a little damn in the river and falls through the twigs. Saki decides to use her powers to set it free even though it is forbidden to use Cantus outside school. Everyone promises not to tell and the Queerats aren’t speaking English so things will probably be okay. Satoru seems the most nervous about the situation. Saki’s mother tries talking to Saki about school but Saki is more interested in asking her what happened when she, the mom, was in school. When the mom is evasive Saki no longer cares about the subject. At school the kids are told they are going to go on a week long camping trip and this it is going to be super important. As the trip starts the kids look like they are having fun. An older Saki then starts talking about how Maria nearly died due to complications at her birth…and how it might have been better for a lot of people had she died. THE END!

Now I am analyzing everything anyone says to anyone. And surely I will still miss things!
X_____X The internets may or maybe not have spoiled things for me. Since I am such a horrible speller I try and make sure I get the names correct by going to different websites instead of relying on my memory. But of the FIRST images of this series was….well I thought was wishful fanart. Me and my yaoi colored glasses understand things like that. But then an official looking picture next to said fanart sorta…well…revealed things that may or may not happen in this show. Trying to be vague on what is going on but several love triangles are happening with this show and everyone needs to pray for Mamoru right now. With all my internal nonsense out of the way…time to talk about the show!

A bit of yawn face here.
A lot of the episode had to do with the game. For me the game was rather boring. Sorry that was probably mean to say. I am sure a lot of time and effort went into those games. I am not a person who is like OH SNAP scholarships for athletics and nothing for smart people. This skill that has yet to be defined properly seems hard to use and needs to be trained. So I am not bashing the game for not being physical, just that way too much of the episode was devoted to this over the top serious game. Maybe it was the outfits that made me giggle, so serious.
Photobucket
So dramatic indeed!
Perhaps there was a point to having the game last so long. That the rest of the series is going to be full of sadness and what not so lets have some fun in childhood before it is all smashed to pieces. Or maybe the game aspect lasted so long because it was showing us how NOT ONCE did Reiko’s name get mentioned. Like everyone is having fun and school and bonding and look….all the other teams have 6 members in them. WHERE IS YOUR 6TH MEMBER!?
Photobucket
Don't ya'll live in the same town/village?! Not understanding this craziness!
Someone said on the internets that the kids were told Reiko was going to be out of school for a while. I don’t remember that statement being made but even so she got NO mention at all. Not a hope she feels better, lets visit her after school! Hell Satoru could have said something like HAHA we have a chance at winning now that Reiko is gone. Instead we got nothing but a brief mention made by OLDER Saki who has time to process everything. It felt very, very creepy. I know she is not a core 5 kid but she is a classmate yes? What the hell is going on here? Were the kids given some kind of drugs to make them more lucid or something?

So all the while when the kids are making their little game projects in the back of the viewers mind we are thinking um why aren’t they talking about Reiko? That even these happy moments of fun are tainted by an underlining creepy factor. Oh and what would be a Shin Sekai Yori episode if there wasn’t some creepy story being read by the kids. Do they really think these stories are…education lessons? Clearly they are warnings to the kids. That hey leave the village, die. Become arrogant and it would be best for everyone if you died. It is so creepy that the kids are just reading these stories out loud and aren’t wondering the point behind them.
Photobucket
Poor poor Mamoru.
But yes the game. Roll a ball with your powers, defend the ball with other little figures. Maybe life in this village is so…quaint this is a big deal. Watching the kids work together was interesting but I am worried about Mamoru. I told you to pray for him! Now that Reiko is gone he is the obvious weak link. And you saw what happened to the last weak link. A bit of bonding, some flirting going, and a way to test the out the kids without making it obvious.
Photobucket
Do your eyes work?
While that kid who cheated on multiple levels was pretty lame…what was up with the teacher? Was he afraid of causing another issue and was going to let it slide? Like nope don’t want to push Manabu over the edge, we will just it a draw. Perhaps the teacher was aware of the other issue that Shun brought up? That the teacher knew there was cheating going on but if it got more attention it would bring light to things that the adults are hiding from the kids. I think that our group of 5 should have focused more on the teacher brushing the issue aside rather than Manabu and his cheating self.
Photobucket
Clearly this is worthy of demonness!
Maybe I take that back. Kids are jerks and this game was a big deal to everyone. Maybe that is why it was easier for the kids to focus on Manabu instead of the teacher. In Older Saki’s dialogue it talks about how Cantuses (?) can’t come in contact with each other or something awful will happen. Perhaps Manabu has cheated before and realizes that rule is actually a lie told by the adults. I think what Manabu did was cruddy but not worthy of disappearing like he did. Of course the kid in the story didn’t do much either and he got turned into a demon. Kids are brats and most grow out of it. This world is a little harsh on petty things is it not?
Photobucket
The parents are super truthful, we knows this yes?
The whole Queerat issue was interesting. There is a theory going on in the internets involving the Queerat but since I didn’t come up with it myself I don’t know if I will repeat it. It is interesting though. What I thought was that children who still have gravity and not Cantus (using words that I don’t understand is fun!) can understand what the Queerats are saying. That is why I think the adults keep the two groups separated, not because Queerats like that power so much.
Photobucket
Or grab a stick?
So Saki and her friends couldn’t have walked over to the smallest damn on the face of the planet and take out the Queerat? It was a lot of drama about a small issue. If they were that afraid of getting caught its what I would have done. Also Shun seems to be getting a lot of credit for a lot of things that seem rather simple. I wonder why Saki is so fond of Shun…HMMM! So Saki and her powers and the Queerats…all very interesting.
Photobucket
A very interesting way to start of your reign....
I don’t think I have mentioned the first two minutes of the episode yet have I? At first I was like WFT is going on?! Then I realized that the 500 years meant 500 years in the future at this point in time. When the Tokyo incident 500 years from that point. Which you know..can still be confusing. Is the show going on now that much more in the future? Or is it a more recent past. In any event it seems it took a long time for those with powers to take over. X__X If they could do that to people what took so long?!

I think if adults want to keep the kids from learning about their deep, dark secrets…don’t let them go on field trips. XD Inside a classroom they can easily be monitored. Out they will break off into their smaller groups. I mean I guess the adults thought they had all the pieces of their past hidden. But I am guessing they didn’t hide every single little piece. Maybe next time they should let the kids have their fun/freedom in a more controlled environment. I understand letting the kids out so they don’t find even more trouble….wait maybe this was a test too! XO
Photobucket
Just slide that interesting comment right in there....
So…a lot of talk about the last few lines of the episode. The kids are going off on their field trip when for no reason older Saki talks about how life would have been better had Maria not been born. It was worded in such a way that it could imply a lot of people died or a lot of people suffered. Now…I too was shocked at this revelation. It came out of nowhere. Maria really had nothing to do with this episode except she didn’t hit Mamoru in the head when he messed up. But other than that…nothing. So why the hell say this now? Like there was really no reason to pull a Madoka on us. Because in Madoka the MOG phrase or idea introduced actually had something to do with what was going on at the time. This line said by Older Saki just came out of nowhere. Maybe next time a little more build up before laying down the WHOA line.
Photobucket
My thoughts exactly.
And so ends the episode. Funny how after everything is said and done Adult Saki is going to blame Maria. Like shouldn’t she be blaming the adults? Interesting indeed. When is the banishing going to happen? Because if another kid disappears and they don’t care I might write them all off as robots void of emotion.

Check out the emperor's hat! D: I've seen some ugly hats in my life, but the big cheese's hat was too much for me! So exaggerated and weird! And then the weirdness of the hat leads to a hundred people dying! Is this show trying to combine horror with comedy? Not my type of comedy. :(

Christina, I know you said this show was action, sci-fi, drama, etc. but I'm still getting some horror vibes from this show. Village with a dark secret, main girl trying to be detective, strange creatures (never heard of a Queerat before. Beavers, yes, but not Queerat) and people dying via emperor's dark joke. Is this show going to end with almost everyone but the protagonist dead like a typical horror movie?

I agreed with what Eternia commented on episode 1, most of the characters are rather unlikable. Maybe the writers want us to despise them so that when they die there won't be any remorse the audience feels for them. It's the typical horror movie 101 writing: the jerks get it first from the monster. I could be wrong though.

Hmm. Not sure what the genre of this show is now.

Off-topic: Speaking of horror movies, Paranormal Activity 4 is becoming the next Saw franchise! I called it right here! :)

First anonymous here again.

Just finished re-reading the blog. About the 500 years later jump. I too thought it was in the past but it's clearly in the future. Did some sort of apocalypse happen that caused people to revert back to the feudal age? Because I'm sure the emperor of Japan and his relatives in real Japan don't have much or any political influence on the country. Maybe as the symbol of the state and people, yes, but not as much power as the prime minister would. So why did Japan revert back to having an emperor as the leader? Apocalypse? Or is he still a symbol?

Hundred people being unwillingly sacrificed, yeah, I doubt that go real well with the rest of the country. Probably would lead to a revolution/civil war once the word spreads. Look what happened to real life leaders of countries who are brutal and cruel to their people, like the ones in Libya, Egypt, and currently Syria.

I love a good mystery and suspense but I am going crazy trying to figure out what on earth is going on, too. I will just have to accept being fed teaspoonfuls of the plot until things really start to pick up. However, I can’t help but have the feeling that these early episodes are meant to provide some type of an epic foreshadow of what is to come. I would like to think so anyway, it would be a shame if none of these events were necessary to begin with. I’m rooting for this show to be good. x(><)x *keeping fingers crossed.

Anonymous- The Emperor of Sparkles or whatever it was was super scary. Like I want to laugh at his appearance but now tons of people are dying so that might not be the best time to laugh.

I am getting horror vibes all over the place too. Also given how Saki has been so far I am kinda disappointed that she might be the only survivor from the main group. If that is what she meant by that sentence.

It was confusing at first, the whole 500 years in the past. But we have to think about it 500 years in the future from this point. Like 201X so 500 years from that. It would be the past for the kids in the show but the present for us. It does hurt my head thinking that war would lead to such a decline in technology. I mean obviously we wouldn't have as many people to run factories and such but still the new set of people should be advancing like we did, not staying the same for 100 years.

Genmu- I really hope something epic is coming too. I understand being given tiny pieces of information at a time but not explaining the terms AT ALL is the real confusing part. Like yes what are Queerats but how about you explain what this power is called and how it is used? Very basic things are not being explained so the viewer has many mysteries to deal with at once.
