Seitokai no Ichizon Episodes 1-2

The show that will never die....

Before the New Year started I searched the internet to add a few more blogs to my blog roll. I like reading about new and upcoming animes and how other people react to series. Also I find reading other people’s blogs a great way to add new animes to my viewing schedule, animes that might sound totally lame in the synopsis but are actually pretty decent.

I recently added Borderline Hikikomori to my blog roll after see the website on someone’s blog roll. XD After reading a few of their post I found myself liking their writing style and relating to what they had to say.

For one of their 12 days of Christmas posts they mentioned Seitokai no Ichizon. I had originally decided not to watch this show because it mentioned the evil word harem (although…you know Tenchi…) and minutes from a high school meeting sounds pretty lame to me. But Borderline Hikikomori seems to hate harem animes too yet stuck with this show. They talked about Seitokai no Ichizon in such a way I decided to give it a chance (and further putting behind my CANAAN viewingness) and watch a few episodes.

Spoilers for episodes 1 and 2 are after the cut. Spoilers are fun for everyone!

Although it is refreshing to see what a student council really is instead of a bunch of 15 years old with the brains of 35 year old men playing God over the school.

I am going to start off my post by saying this anime, Seitokai no Ichizon, will not win any awards or go down in history as one of the best animes of all time. At the most it is an entertaining way to spend 22 minutes at a time and it is way better than watching the brand new Bachelor. It is average. But sometimes average can be good and average means it has a little bit of everything than can appeal to a larger audience. So….it is what it is.

Without moe fanboys would starve.

That being said I thought the first two episodes were enjoyable. Enjoyable enough for me to continue watching this series.

This looks...slightly familiar...

I am happy that the harem aspect of this show is really just an ongoing joke. Yes there is one guy verses four girls and chances are they all do like him in a romantic way. But the pervy scenes are done in such a way that I am not rolling my eyes and eying the roof of my house. Most of the time the joke is on the male, Ken, and the focus is not on embarrassing the girls. That and the fact that Ken keeps mentioning the fact that he wants a harem, that he is pretending his life is a H-game, and that all the girls know how Ken views them. XD

Loving the brutal honesty.

Speaking of Ken he isn’t very likable or magnificent. He seems to fit the profile of a typical male in a harem anime/manga. He thinks that too but for different reasons. He thinks the girls want to fall all over him but there is nothing about him that would make the girls go wild. Which is precisely why all the girls will fall over him. Because girls don’t want a bad boy; they want the “loser” who can’t get a date.

Are we having a moment here?

Kurimu is the student council president and as such she is the voice of reason when it comes to doing work. Or she is the leader of getting sidetrack from getting work done. Kurimu is the moe character out of the group yet she looks like a child. So far most of the content has focused either on hating Ken or making fun Kurimu. Which is fine with me.

It's always the quite ones....

Chizuru is the “mature” member of the group. In theory anyway. She tries to act like the mother hen but really she might be more perverted than Ken. She has an angry streak and probably will be the character who strikes the most fear in people’s hearts. Also her boobies are big. This is important.

Her reaction to the recent movie was awesome.

Minatsu is my favorite character and her type usually ends up with the boy in the end. I doubt this will be the case in Seitokai no Ichizon but this series really isn’t about the pairings (at least not yet). Minatsu seems to stand up to Ken more than the other girls yet she seems to be more on his wave link suggesting weird ideas. XD I like her.

Isn't that card banned now?

Mafuyu is meh for me. I don’t like how she refers to herself in the third person; it doesn’t seem to flow naturally. I do like her gaming side of her as girl gamers are often portrayed rather…special like. It is nice to see a cute girl gamer. Gamers come in all shapes and sizes people! But yeah, as a whole Mafuyu feels like a 5th wheel on the fun party.

We're all going to die down here.

The first episode was funny but I think it relied a lot on other shows to carry its jokes. Which isn’t anything NEW as other anime shows do their fair share of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragon Ball Z, ect mentions. But Seitokai no Ichizon also mentioned non anime/popular shows which amused me. Seeing Resident Evil as a gag was hilarious for me. So while I think maybe there were too many other show references I did like how they threw in some oddballs for us.

Photobucket

YOU SEE NOTHING!

I also liked the Death Note scene. Yes it is a popular show, easy gag but I like it okay!

Everything needs an anime this is true!

I also enjoyed how the show opened up with talking about…how it was a show. The little rants about the different kinds of media and whether or not it was a good thing they were becoming an anime was interesting to watch (and read super duper fast as these characters talk a mile a minute). Again is this self awareness a new thing? No but it is enjoyable to watch.

Oh look Ken turns out to be a good guy after all. I am shocked and amazed.

So in conclusion while this show isn’t going to go down in history as the BEST SHOW EVER it is an interesting way to spend some time. Hopefully the next 10 episodes keep up the fun pace and that the perverted aspects are only kept as jokes against Ken. XD So the next time you brush aside a certain anime read several bloggers takes on it to make sure you aren’t missing out on something interesting.

Also the new Bachelor is beyond boring. Or maybe it has always been boring and I have forgotten that what with Survivor and the Amazing Race. But the over the topness of beautiful people not being able to find love is truly amazing. Really I am crying tears of blood for you people.
