:( Even though this is only the second to last episode..it is still close enough to the end that I am feeling sad. It feels like this series just started and BAM now it's practically over.
I think what is makes this ending sad (or disappointing) is that I think Eden of the East could have gone on much longer and had a really, REALLY complicated plot. At this point (is this spoilerish??) that we aren't even going to meet all the Selecaos. X_X It seems like this series is more like the OVA of a longer, more crazy anime.
Despite all that...this series is really good and episode 10 gives out a LOT of information, but not too much. Or it is too much in a good way. In any event it is a really enjoyable episode and all must watch it. Do it OR ELSE. XD
Micchon and Saki watch as Akira stays on the platform and they take off on the train. Saki makes a X_X face and reads messages Ohsugi left on her phone. Akira turns around and Selecao number One is behind him (the one who killed Panties). For the sake of making sense I will use their actual names (now that there is one whole episode left and all). Mononobe (number 1) questions Akira and finds out that Akira does not have his memories back and he has been acting out of confusion. Mononobe says he is going to go to a small city and end this game and that if Akira comes he can learn how to win the game too and the real reason behind erasing his memories. Akira goes to follow but Saki calls. She tells Akira she knows something is up with that phone and Akira is hiding things. Akira tells her he will leave the phone on while he travels with that man and if it turns out he is a bad guy he will be out of her life. The other Eden members are looking at the pile of phones and wondering if any of this has to do with the missing NEETS. They get an update on Micchon and Saki. Both Micchon and club president get a text message from Panties but the file is too big to handle over the phone.
Saki and Micchon then listen to Akira as he talks to Mononobe. They briefly talk about the NEETS. Most of the conversation focuses on who Mononobe thinks Mr. Outside is. Apparently he thinks Mr. Outside is a man who helped reform/remake Japan after it was bombed in World War Two. At first Mr. Outside was okay with how Japan turned out but over time he started to question if what he did was right. That is why he picked 12 people to try to change Japan, so that it would be fairer or whatever. Not that any of this matters because when the game first began Mr. Outside had cancer and Mononobe thinks he is dead. Mononobe’s plan is to become Mr. Outside himself and I guess save the others from dying. They land at a ATO building, the place that Mr. Outside used to run/own. Mononobe works here now and is pretty high up on the food chain. Yuuki (number 10) is waiting in the lobby and it is revealed he is the one who fired the missiles on Japan. Tsuji (number 2) is waiting inside and it is revealed that he hasn’t spent any of this money and just wants this all to end. Akira enters this futuristic weird room and talks about how he thought all the people answering the phone were different girls off in some secret place. But it turns out this futuristic room is Juiz as she is straight out of Eagle Eye and is a computer. Yuuki questions Mononobe and why he is telling Akira all this. Mononobe says that Akira was chosen to be one of the 12 and has a right to know before the rest of the world. Yuuki speaks up and explains his reasons for firing the missiles. He had been used and abused by the system and he would never have a chance to move up in society. Angered by THE MAN the missiles were Yuuki’s way of getting back. Mononobe also agrees with this method as it gets rid of the elderly people stuck in their ways and the useless people of society (apparently the NEETS).
Akira declares this whole thing stupid and Yuuki smiles, saying that he said that before when he saved the people near the missile site. Mononobe starts to explain that the people who were helping him and the people who were helped both betrayed him. The rest of the Eden members get Panties’ information and they pour over the entry logs. For some reason only Yuuki’s data is in red. Before the group can put the pieces together a cargo ship arrives…with the 20k naked NEETS. They swarm on the place and group runs before they can figure out what the hell is going on. Akira has apparently learned the truth behind his memory erasing reason as he looks sad. Saki collapses to the ground and thinks she is just as bad, as she wanted something bigger than Careless Monday to happen. Yuuki wonders if it is okay to let Akira go since they do not have full control of the system. Mononobe thinks that it will be fine and that Akira’s attempt to stop them won’t work anyway. Earlier Mononobe had ordered champagne. It arrives…and the bottle is empty. The woman runs out of the room leaving some cryptic message. Number 12 used their money to move Juiz and this shocks the three men. They think that number 12 is either the Supporter or Mr. Outside now. Akira is riding on top of a freight train, in the cold and looking depressed. The end!
Holy crap. X_X This series is going to end in one episode. I thought that the studio was keeping things under wrap and were going to go SURPRISE and we would get 11 more episodes. But that is a big fat nope. Especially after how this episode went down.
I was a little bit confused about Mononobe. Or confused how a person could be like Mononobe. I couldn’t imagine killing someone and then the next minute talking rationale to another human being. I would be a huge wreck or….a cackling psychopath in the corner. But maybe Mononobe is a psychopath and he does believe what he is doing is right and thus he does not feel guilty.
That and I am still confused on WHY he killed Panties. Panties was going to go and tell Akira what was going on behind the missiles and stuff. So it is understandable that Mononobe would kill Panties to keep that information a secret. But then he went and told Akira himself. X_X What sense does that make? It just seems like a senseless death and crazy. Also Mononobe is not helping improve the nation by killing the person who supports the Selecao who is saved people. Err, I am sure that sentence made sense.
But Mononobe does give Akira a lot of information. Like on who he thinks Mr. Outside is. Not sure if Mr. Outside is really that person but I am impressed that Mononobe figured out that part of the puzzle. And I am a bit disappointed that Mr. Outside could be dead. I want there to be an epic showdown where everything is explained and we learn what it is like to be in the mind of a crazy person. It loses a little bit of something when Akira and the others can’t get back at Mr. Outside for putting their lives in danger. But apparently there are enough crazy Selecaos to go around and maybe Mr. Outside really isn’t needed. But I am still sad.
More of the show is lost upon the Western world with this episode. I am sure I would be able to understand how Japan was restored after World War II if I was Japanese. But since I am from the country that bombed Japan…yeah, I can’t. I am not sure how much the youth of today are affected by War World II but the point still applies. The point is Japan changed after the war and that is connected to the show now. That part of the show will not be fully understood to outsiders and I am going to accept that.
The Saki and Akira relationship has really, really taken a back seat lately. Now we have Saki just listening in on phone conversations and feeling upset about the situation. No real interaction at all. I guess it is sweet that Akira is naive enough to let Saki listen in and leave him when things get hairy but still…I wanted them to actually talk more and be together more. But at least Saki was honest with Akira and isn’t hiding the fact that people mistrust him. That is bonus points.
So we found out the reason behind Careless Monday and all the missiles that hit Japan. X_X It is the master plan of a 20 something year old who is mad he had to work dead end jobs to support his family. For some reason I thought the reasoning was going to be…grander, for the greater good. That is what Mononobe was trying to spin it to be but Yuuki’s reasoning was not so “noble”. It left me going…really? X.X I am not sure how to explain it. I thought all along the missiles were meant to scare people into living life to its fullest and not taking for granted what is out there. You know, apparently that whole Watchman movie and what not. Focus on how to beat the terrorist and ban together. But really…it was just some kid who had to work for THE MAN and wanted to get back at THE MAN. Makes me wonder why Mr. Outside picked these people.
Juiz is a computer. I am shocked and amazed. But not really. I am surprised that Mononobe knows the location of Juiz and that she is not more protected from you know…being destroyed or changed. And also this completely looked like Eagle Eye and then Akira mentioning all these American movies and my mind almost exploded. I am not sure how Mononobe made it so that Akira couldn’t stop them using Juiz but none of that matters as Juiz is safe.
I would like to personally stab the writers/creators for holding out on the details about Akira’s mind erasing episode. I love how they jump around and show what everyone else is doing and BAM the answer has already been given. And apparently it has something to do with Akira getting his feelings hurt over the people helping him not being grateful? I really, really hope it is something bigger, like somehow everything was going to be linked to him and would be like that person in Watchmen (I keep mentioning that movie but I never saw it…). I am just hoping the last episode (err, next week) really explains that Akira forced himself to forget his past in a Death Note kinda way so he wins the game and saves everyone!
Things are really coming to ahead now. We got 20k naked NEETS running around, distracting the Eden group long enough to hinder them from finding out the real truth (until next week of course). More missiles are set to explode Japan within 8 hours and apparently Akira won’t be able to save the day this time. And the Supporter has been found out and is trying to help Akira save people? Next week’s episode better be good and explain all these lovely facts..or else. Yeah, that’s it. OR ELSE!
