I know this is going to be a different experience for me because I am slow to the game. Meaning I watched Clannad first so naturally when I was watching the first two episodes I kept comparing it to Clannad. It might be hard to correct my thinking with WOW, Clannad is like Kanon. :P Either way both shows are very similar.
I am also not saying it is a bad thing that the two shows are similar. If you have a formula that works and people keep coming back for more then keep on going. So unless people said yeah, we are tired of the same old formula…they are going to continue producing tear jerking, sweet little animes about high school students, cute animals, and hilarious moments.
Let’s start talking about these two episodes shall we!!!
A boy (Yuichi) is waiting on a bench while he is slowly being covered in snow and freezing to death. A young girl (Nayuki) runs up and sorta apologizes for being late. Yuichi picks on her and pretends to not know her name since he has not seen her in 7 years. But he does know her name and they are just teasing each other. As they walk home there is a flashback of some other event taking place. A young girl is talking about the red snow and how a young boy is crying. She is concerned for the boy but we never see the young girl’s face. It is just an up shots of trees and a red sky. Elsewhere Yuichi wakes up to Nayuki searching for her school uniform. She teaches him the proper way to greet the morning and tells him she is going to school on her day off because she is a member of the track club. She does promise to show him around the city he has not been in for 7 years. Yuichi then freezes his bum off helping his Aunt Akiko shovel the snow. Throughout the entire show he talks about how he has little to no memories from 7 years ago and how he doesn’t know why he can’t remember anything. Nayuki returns home from school and is ready to show him around. She shows him the school, the hospital (which I am sure is important), and some other places that Yuichi should probably remember. There is also a small scene with a girl playing with a wild dog (Mai) and her friend.
While showing Yuichi around town they run into her best friend Kaori and the guy who is in love with Kaori, Jun. Yuichi has a great time picking on Jun and Kaori seems happy to meet this cousin of Nayuki’s. They are given a soft drink of love apparently. Yuichi and Nayuki go to a hill that apparently has memories for the two but Yuichi does not remember anything. A wild fox approaches them, but runs away when Nayuki is insane and tries to pet it. She then tries to remember the special legend of the fox on this hill…but she can’t. They arrive at a grocery store where Yuichi says he will wait outside for his cousin. She smiles, saying they had this exact same conversation before. She goes inside….and promptly a young girl runs into Yuichi. She is all crying and making a scene and people start talking that maybe Yuichi upset her. Then she takes Yuichi’s hand and they take off running to a café. The girl seems very upset and that someone is chasing her. After a little interrogation he learns that the girl, Ayu, has stolen food from a vendor and he was chasing her. Yeah, Yuichi is not impressed with her tears. He takes her back to the stand, pays for the food, and forces her to apologize. She is happy afterwards that everything worked out but not so happy when Yuichi makes fun of her use of the word Uguu. He then asks why her she has wings on her back. She spins around like a special ed person until she sees them. He then calls her a very special girl :P. She promises to pay him back…but is a bit shocked when she finds out his name. She says she hopes they can meet again and takes off running. Yuichi then has a flashback but doesn’t understand what is it about. He then freaks out because he remembers he left his cousin. He goes back to the store to find her waiting. She is a bit miffed but realizes that she left him waiting too yesterday. They arrive home and Yuichi is too tired to unpack all his belongings. Nayuki loans him one of her many alarms clocks. He tries to fall asleep but has a nagging feeling in the back of his mind. He then has a flashback (or we just get to see) when a younger Nayuki and Yuichi go to the store and Yuichi says he will just wait outside. A younger Ayu runs up to him and is crying hard. People talk and whisper about her being bullied so he takes her hand and off running they go.
The second episode starts off with a girl’s voice talking about a dream she always has. She wishes that once she could wake up and the scenery would be different. Yuichi wakes up with the alarm clock singing to him with Nayuki’s voice. Then the house starts to shake with a huge noise. Nayuki has set the rest of her alarm clocks to go off at the same time….and yet she will not wake up. Yuichi turns all the alarms off and shakes her awake. She finally does get herself conscious and down to breakfast they go. While eating breakfast Akiko mentions special jam and Nayuki excuses herself from the room. Yuichi is not so lucky and gets to eat Akiko’s special jam. He is a real gentleman and finishes the whole slice without barfing. Yuichi and Nayuki joke about the special jam later while walking to school. Yuichi keeps making comments about how it is always so cold in this town. Nayuki seems determined on getting back Yuichi’s lost memories. They are almost late to school but Nayuki forces them to run the rest of the way. Yuichi nearly passes out while Nayuki greets Kaori and Jun. Nayuki hopes that they all can be together in the same class and he wish is granted. She can’t contain her excitement while Yuichi tries to melt in the corner. After school Nayuki says she has to stay for track practice. Yuichi wants to look around school and Nayuki warns him not to get lost since the school is so very big. Yuichi requests that that she cannot tell anyone they are living together because then people will think they are having sex. Too late, she already has…and she trips down the stairs. She falls into weird Mai and her friend Sayuri. Yuichi starts all weird at them as they walk up the stairs.
Despite Nayuki’s warning….he gets miserably lost in school and stumbles into every single room in the school, including an art class painting a naked dude. He runs into Kaori who helps him out of the school since he is such a freak. She almost remembers that Jun is waiting for her…but she leaves anyway. Yuichi goes about trying to get his grocery shopping done..but Ayu comes running at him again. The little freak has once again stolen from a vendor and pulls him away to avoid the man. But she happens to pull him in a part of town she is not really familiar with. Aka now they are both lost. But that’s okay since this gives them both the time to repeat their names and go you are THAT person. Ayu seems to really remember Yuichi and Yuichi acts like he may remember her too. Ayu goes in for a dramatic reunion hug…when Yuichi moves and she runs into a tree. Yeah awesome. But the impact of her crash knocks all this snow on a poor passerbyer Shiori. Ayu makes excuses about the snow and how it was not her fault, but eventually the two help pick up her groceries. They walk with her for a bit talking and chit chatting. Turns out that Ayu is older than this girl which shocks Yuichi a bit. Before they bid Shiori goodbye they ask her for directions back to town. After the apologize to Mr. vendor dude, Ayu runs off saying they will meet up again. Yuichi is like….but you didn’t give me any contact information. Yuichi does his grocery shopping and is about to go home when he is attacked by a very weak crazy girl. She screams that he has done her wrong and he has no idea who she is. Of course Yuichi has to help her since she passes out from her awesome karate skills.
I just might like Yuichi more than Tomoya. It is way too early to tell and I’ll have a better idea after I finish the series….but has made a great first impression. He’s not as snarky or sarcastic as Tomoya. He has more of a sense of humor that comes without him pranking on people. Well except for teasing Ayu for the Uguu thing….and even then he wasn’t picking on her per say….
In any event Yuichi is pretty entertaining. His spiel about not remembering events from 7 years ago might get a little old though….I don’t want that to consume his life and be his entire character. Even if I am very interesting on WHAT happened. But he is like Tomoya in regards to having a harem of girls around him. He is also like Tomoya in regards to him being the more “stable” and voice of reason one in this crowd of craziness. I shall enjoy watching Yuichi suffer with all these crazy girls.
Nayuki needs to grow on me I suppose….I mean I enjoy the weird things about her, but I want her to have real substance. Of course it is only episode two….so I might be judging her too harshly on her shatter brained personality. I might act weird too if I had that many alarm clocks going off that close to my brain everyday….
Nayuki probably knows the most about what Yuichi has forgotten about. That might explain her over cheerfulness. She has been hurt in the past and just wants to put t hose painful memories behind her. Or I am just assuming too much. But I like how she isn’t forcing Yuichi to remember all at once. She gently shows him around town and tries to jot his memory, but no tears or melt downs…yet. So we shall see!
Ayu is the cutest little klepto I have ever met. What a scary little freak. She runs into a random stranger and decides to pull him along for the ride. She can’t handle ANY loud voices and will run off with your merchandise. She runs around saying Uguu (which I am sure is cuter in Japanese context). Oh and she spins around like a freak looking for wings. And to think I thought Nagisa’s obsession with dangos was weird.
Since Ayu is so damn cute…she must be dead or something equally horrible like a molested runaway. After watching Clannad I know happy girls are really sad, depressed little girls inside and I don’t think it’s “I think I ruined my parent’s acting career”. I am pretty sure it’s “I am a ghost” or “my parents died in a horrible plane crash!!!” Poor crazy klepto.
The supernatural element of Kanon screams Clannad (even though it is really the other way around). The disembodied voice, somber imagery, and overall depressed atmosphere are eerily familiar to the other world. But unlike Clannad…Kanon is actually giving us hints. Very blurry and split second hints but hints none the less. This voice (of a young girl) is probably someone who died and Yuichi cried over. It probably happened in the forest, near those magical foxes. I actually like this memory scene better than the other world. The sad snow images and dreary back grounds touch me more than robot man. I just hope the big reveal is worth it in the end.
Another “Clannad element” is the scary inedible food. But instead of bread it’s jam. Killer jam that takes you on an acid trip of scary proportions. And Yuichi was special enough to consume said poison food. Poor Akiko has no husband to say her poison food of doom is perfect. But Akiko seems confident enough with her cooking abilities. Long live the jam!
The other girls are pretty interesting (but not as interesting as my dear Kotomi!!!) We have Kaori who…is using poor Jun but otherwise seems normal. Mai had a very creepy calm voice…which also means she is a psycho path deep down. And crazy…attacking girl is simply crazy. OH and the snow girl X_X Yeah, this is a lot of girls. But looking around at different pictures Kaori might not be a main character. So she will be more like Ryou. So we got a whole lot of crazy girls. Tomoya didn’t even have it that bad. X_X No one seems remotely normal. Maybe it’s a good thing he forgot!
Are you people of importance?
It seems like a lot happened in these two episodes but only 48 hours have passed. And a lot of characters have been introduced. The series has me hooked. XD I am excited to finally watch a series that everyone seems to be talking about. There are probably things I forgot to mention…but I think I covered all the important parts. Or I can always go back later at my series review and better explain things. So I shall indulge myself with this anime in my spare time. :) Thanks for reading this…very “late” review.
