Look folks! More anime blog posts! Go me! My tummy is full of salad and I am motivated. I am not sure what the two have to do with each other.....
I have been asking that since day one!
I am not sure if I will feel this motivated tomorrow but here are two posts back to back. Enjoy. Up first is Shin Sekai Yori episode 9. Spoilers for things getting WORSE!
WOOHOO! Soon this school will be empty.
Episode Summary: Classes go on at school without Shun. Saki looks sad at his empty seat and thinks how he has been gone for 4 days. During a break or after school Satoru talks about how they need to go rescue/find Shun using whatever methods possible. Maria jokes that this is Satoru's way of getting Shun's affections back and Mamoru points out Shun never really wanted to blow up. Satoru tries to get the stupids back on track as Shun told Saki information and maybe he has more to tell them. Maria points out that Shun said they were being watched and that doing anything might put them in danger. Satoru starts to go off along but Saki quickly says she will help. Maria states that's not fair, that everyone cares for Shun. It is decided that Maria and Mamoru will go to school and talk to Shun's friends about what has happened. Satoru and Saki make their way to Shun's home village of Pinewood to see what is up. Saki remembers back when she first met a young Shun when Satoru points out the huge boat in the water and how the village has been sealed off. They decide to go through the woods instead. They see a Queerat walking around but that moment passes and they continue on. The woods are sealed off but they....crawl under the ropes and walk through the forest. They start to see weird things like dead moths and frost on the ground. Saki is like this is some crazy shit ya'll. They finally make it...somewhere.....and there is a huge hole in the ground. They are shocked but hide from the people standing around. Satoru makes a mirror so they can see what is going on and underneath all the mess is a huge root. Saki thinks back to the meeting with Shun and remembers a huge tree. Maria and Mamoru are trying to talk to people at school but realize everyone from Pinewood is absent.
Err don't mind me....
Despite being super worried Satoru and Saki decide to go home and start looking for Shun in the day light. Saki returns home a mess and her parents greet her warmly. They start talking about borrowing electricity for street lights and the library when Saki is like HELLO SHUN IS MISSING! Her parents try to sweep it up under the rug but finally her dad is like...yeah he is missing. But we aren't supposed to talk about it Saki, we are protecting you. The father explains that a big incident happened in Pinewood and the mother talks about how she doesn't want to lose another. Saki goes to her room and thinks about how Maria told her their names mean things. Saki remembers her name means youngest child and TADA an older sister is remembered?! But where is she? Before Saki can think about this Maria appears all upset. She explains how all the Pinewood kids were absent and Mamoru and her snuck into the center of the school, the parts where the kids whisper rumors about dead kids. They found huge storage units inside and when they listened in they heard awful noises. They hid as the door was opened and their teacher and two others entered. They started talking about tainted cats and how they had to send them out before he came a karma demon. The name Shun was mention and things started to add up in Saki's head. A huge cat was taken from the contained and the adults leave with it. Maria leaves and Saki gets ready for her rescue mission. She sneaks out of the house and makes her way down the river to Pinewood without being detected. In a dramatic moment she reaches the woods and finds a stick to light on fire. When she looks up she sees a tainted cat staring at her. THE END!
I have a lot of questions for the person who created this show.
Really folks? Really? Is this REALLY happening in front of my eyes? The original source material for this show won an award? Was the award the most messed up show ever? Because then maybe I would believe it.
Look how complex and deep we can be!
I think part of the problem with this show is how it is being animated. Both the style and the graphics. If that makes sense. Like this show is trying so hard to be edgy and cool and look at us being all dramatic it is hard to understand what is going on. Like when Saki has flashbacks about certain things the way it happens is so dramatic and fast it is hard to comprehend what exactly is going on. Shun and tree, the time when the priest was stabbing HIMSELF and making Saki think she was doing so, ect. This show is already hard to understand at times, don't make it worse by adding unnecessary styling just to make yourself look like an amazing anime.
Oh look more disappeared kids.
Is there a point to this civilization? I would like to think after 1000 years the elders have worked out the kinks and maybe only a handful of kids are banished at a time and mostly everyone lives a happy life. Clearly that is not the case. Rumors all over the place, parents living in fear that their kids will be taken away, and rules all over the place. What is the point? No one seems really happy and it is way too much effort for very little reward. There are so many fail safes and what not in place and yet all these incidences keep happening. It is not working. People are not growing up and being happy adults. Instead they grow up and worry about the next generation. Almost like the Hunger Games, why would you bother having kids if you knew this trash was their future? With all these in place why can't they just permanently hypnotize people into forgetting about powers and forget all this nonsense?
Does Saki remember anything?!
Oh that was a silly question right? Because obviously this hypnotizing crap doesn't work. I was talking about hypnotizing the kids like at 2 and calling it a day. Maybe they tried that and it didn't work. It looks like only hypnotize people for certain things though. A lost sibling, yes. A lost Shun, no. This makes me wonder if something has been lost in translation. All of the kids were like oh Reiko is gone time to go camping. But Shun is gone, time to panic! One could argue that the kids weren't that close to her. Well maybe she had other friends in a different group. They should have worried. And worrying kids could mean out of control kids which would cause chaos in a matter of days. So why not hypnotize everyone once someone is flushed out of society? Guess that would be nonstop but....
Wait you care where your friend is?!
Wait this is really bothering me now. Do all the kids know that people disappear and just don't talk about it? The parents at dinner were like you KNOW you aren't supposed to talk about it. What does that mean? That as long as it isn't your close friend you won't go all insane? When Reiko disappeared and then the cheater boy it was like a faded away memory. I didn't get the concept that they weren't allowed to acknowledge that. Clarification or sticking to one point would be nice.
Well it is hard to make up with Shun IF HE IS DEAD!
But nice is for sissies. We got a missing Shun here folks. That means it is time for Maria and Mamoru to be insensitive. Well less Mamoru but still. I am sure rescuing Shun would earn Satoru some brownie points and it might explain that Shun never wanted to break up with Satoru. But that is clearly not the main point. The main point is SHUN IS IN DANGER. WE ARE IN DANGER! Focus people. This is not a time to be smiling and thinking what good luck Satoru is experiencing. Does Maria operate on the planet Earth?
OH NO SO HARD!
The elders/people in charge in this time need to get their act together. I suppose they use fear to keep people in line but OH NO ROPES! Surely we cannot get around these ropes. We better turn back. And look we have on boat in the water. Surely that will stop everyone in their little boats from sneaking in. Are these people even trying?
The worst thing ever!
I am not sure what happened at Shun's village. The Saki parents said there was an incident and he and his parents are missing. I really couldn't tell what was going on but it appears at least one building blew up. Like maybe the temple in that area since it had a huge tree in it? I don't know. Maybe they threw Shun in there and he blew it up. Either way Saki and Satoru are worried.
Psht words meaning things.
The conversation with Saki and her parents was interesting. I don't remember Saki's mom saying HER kids before. Just that she was tired of losing KIDS in general. Of course I always assumed it was her kids but still. It was creepy how the parents were going on and on about boring things when Saki was sitting there 5 seconds from exploding. How tense must life be in this world where everyone knows the truth or some version of the truth but can't talk about it? FUN TIMES!
Um...everyone is messed up. The end.
Saki continues to have the best day ever when her lover Maria arrives via window to talk about more things. Since the kids weren't experiencing enough horrible truths Maria and Mamoru went looking for more trouble. All the kids missing from a village seems like enough to me but now we know the truth about the center rooms of the school. How messed up is it that they keep the messed up cat things AT the school to send after the kids when things go “wrong”? So messed up. Of course I think it is messed up that the kids even wanted to go back to the crazy village to begin with. But keeping the animals they sent after the kids to keep THEM from hurting people next to them at school...just so wrong on many levels.
Does Saki still think that Maria is the cause of all the problems? Because UMMMMM
After Saki gets the news that things are pretty bad she decides it is time to Mulan up. Shun might turn into a karma demon so it is time to rescue him. I thought the elders were being over dramatic when they sent the other kids away but Shun seems to deliberately causing problems. This will not end well for him will it? Or Saki as she has made it near his village and HELLO tainted cat. This series is so messed folks.

The tree roots Saki and Satoru saw is the exact tree behind Shun's family in her memory.
I do feel sad for Saki's mom, I mean loosing another one of your child, as a mother, that must be terrifying.
Also, Tenchi, how often did you reply our comments?
Anonymous- I really, really got behind on episode posts and then I got super behind on comments. In my mind I would like to comment faster to people but in reality it never seems to happen. Poor time management skills indeed.
So this tree was in that village's temple right? I assume that Shun's parents brought him there to get some hypnotizing done and it ended in....well no more tree. Just we are supposed to assume a lot of things from 2 seconds worth of images.
As horrible as it is that the parents are hiding things from their kids...I guess they are just trying to survive in this crazy world too. Even if the parents were unaware of things when they were kids they know now and live in fear of losing kids. Even more fear when one kid has already been taken away.
