Lots and lots of doubt.
Up now in this mini blogging marathon is Psycho-Pass episode 14. Spoilers for being happy where/when I live in because this show is messed up. X___X

Security!!! SECURITY!
Episode Summary: Somewhere in the city people are waiting patiently in what looks like a doctor's office. A dude wearing a weird mask walks in and no one bats an eye. He is scanned by the system and is allowed entry it what appears to be a scientist only area. He demands some sort of drug and the male scientist explains in the most boring voice ever tells him where he can purchase such drugs. The man in the mask then shoves some scissors down his throat. The female scientist starts screaming and begging the cameras to help her. The man in the mask demands the drugs again and stabs her with a pen. A short while later Ginoza and the rest of the team arrive at the pharmacy to examine the crime scene and two victims. Everyone is quite confused on how this could happen as the masked man had a very normal coefficient when he entered the room and when he committed the crime. Help never arrived as the robots and scans didn't register this as a crime. All of the team have different levels of doubt and questions about how this can be happening. Ginoza tries to lamely say that this is totally not like the Shougo case and it is probably the helmet. Everyone is like oh okay...and talk about how if word gets out that the system has been beat everyone is DOOMED! Shougo is seen talking to someone, that this person is the only one who really knows the whole plan and not to worry, killing one person is no big deal. A young lady is walking in a busy intersection when a masked man comes up to here...and starts beating her with something. Everyone stops and watches, with some even taking video of the incident. He rips her clothes off and beats her to death as the scanners only pick up on the woman being in distress. That is what sends our little gang over to the area not the actual crime itself. Akane starts to get all sad, thinking about how a Dominator doesn't always work but Shinya reminds her to stay focus. Shion sends everyone the video that is currently on the web (or whatever it is called) and they all watch as everyone else watches the crime taking place. Ginoza nearly loses his little mind at the thought of people just watching this happen. Akane decides that people no longer know how to handle such things thus couldn't really do anything. The scanners say that the masked man had a normal coefficient during the crime and thus the scanners didn't pick up on the crime. Shinya notices that the masked man had the same exact number as someone in the crowd though.

Aren't you the best detective ever?
Shougo is seen telling some people that things are going as planned and to proceed. Three men don the masks and taken down an armor car and all of the stuff inside. Shion then informs our group of this new crime and Ginoza is like is this the world we live in? Earlier he had been explaining to Akane that everything runs in their society based on the idea everyone around them must be safe or the scanners would be going off. So clearly this is really bad news and Ginoza can't handle so much going on at once. He decides to take the two super duper important Enforcers with him to investigate the robbery while Shinya, Daddy, and Akane go back to the pharmacy. No word on the newly dead girl...Shinya is like phst we are not going to the pharmacy I got this figured out. He calls Shion and tells her to investigate anyone that the newly dead girl might be associated with that could look suspicious. One of her co-workers has been missing for two weeks so clearly that means Shinya is amazing. They go to that co-workers house and basically he has a shrine de dead lady all over his house. Clearly his hue was not clear if he was thinking those thoughts thus he missed work. Akane and her grade A detective skills accidentally find the co-worker but when they go to shoot him with the Dominator it reads Akane's numbers instead. The suspect starts to run away with Tomomi chasing him. Akane wants to go after him but Shinya has realized that the helmet is really a scanner too, only it looks for a clear hue and uses it for the owner's. Akane is told to stay back and together with Shion's guidance they trap the co-worker in an empty building and it only has Tomomi's and Shinya's not so clear hue's to pick up on. He is captured and all is well. Elsewhere Shougo basically confirms that this was going to be easy to pick up on but at least the general idea of people being free was put out in the universe. The three masked men decided that Shougo is dumb for letting them have this technology so Shougo goes Jet Li on their asses and walks away with all the spoils. THE END!
Photobucket
And you suck. The end.
And so it begins. The beginning of the end. Say goodbye to these so called peaceful days folks. Chaos is in the streets and by the end of this Enforcers/Inspectors are either going to lose their jobs or lose their heads. Will Shinya be the last man standing?
Photobucket
I'm pretty sure we all know what that woman was thinking right before she died.
Most of this episode I spent screaming at the screen. Like why am I agreeing with Ginoza all the time?! Is this the world I live in?! One day I will do a blog post about phrases I over use in my real life. Is this the world we live in?! is one of them. XD But Ginoza was the one making sense here....well when he wasn't lying. What the heck WAS up with everyone? I can understand that people have been conditioned to rely on the scans and robots to keep the peace but when someone is being hit in the head with a hammer over and over again can we not see this is bad? Can we not use our little eyes to realize THIS IS BAD?!
Photobucket
When in doubt....just stare I guess.
But then I think back to the dead girl statues all over town and how people didn't understand that at first. Maybe...in the near future people will be so used to not having to worry this will all be foreign to them and they will react this like. Like this show is supposed to shock us as no one watching can really say THIS is what they would have done. Called the police or screamed or something. But then again.....people were taping this. So that means some people knew this was out of the ordinary and taped it yet didn't do anything to help. It is hard to say just what is going on here or what the director is trying to show us. People can't both not care/not know something is wrong AND know it is wrong and tape it.
Photobucket
Are you blind?!
Yet folks...eyeballs. EYEBALLS! Someone walks in with what looks like a gas mask and no one bats an eyes. Maybe this is fashionable these days but come on folks. It is like the writer is trying to make this entire society look like fools and that Shougo is really doing them a favor. This is why humans really need to be involved with every aspect of society. We let machines run everything and Skynet takes over and the world turns into crazy. It is almost like Wall-E but instead of becoming fat humans lack common sense skills and soon humans will be brainless animals.
Photobucket
Nope. I blame them. Sorry. I understand that society has made them this way but nope.
And again Akane is portrayed as the person who is the voice of reason. Even if I think Ginoza was actually the correct one. Akane still wants to see the best in people even though she knows first hand that the system is flawed and human being are pretty awful to each other. Just a lot of crap and Akane can still say...the bystanders are not to blame. Well if they didn't know what was going on why were they taping it?
Photobucket
Laying it on way too much Ginoza.
Did I already talk about Ginoza and the fantasy land he lives in? Because really folks really. I know HeadLady told Ginoza to lie to his team and cover up the fact that some people are born able to beat the system but come on. Can we do a little better than this? I am guessing no as he was as believable with a kid covered in chocolate claiming he didn't eat all the cookies. If he hadn't been laying it on so thick it might have been more believable.
Photobucket
Don't mind me, I am just doing all the work like usual.
So while Akane is busy is not blaming anyone and Ginoza is blaming everything but the obvious fact Shinya is actually doing his job and detective work. Like instead of allowing machines to do all the work let me use my brain and piece everything together. I do think he got slightly lucky by picking the crime that was actually the target (well the target of the killer, not Shougo and his master plan). But I guess Shinya is pretty smart. I am not sure how the pharmacy woman was killed but she probably wasn't stripped nearly naked and hit with a hammer 38473 times. That crime did have a high level of hatred motivated behind it.
Photobucket
Her help might have been overshadowed by the fact the criminal was so creepy.
We can't forget about Shion though. Without her faster than lightening computer skills they wouldn't have been able to find the suspect so fast. It is a bit creepy that how much information you can find out about a person in this series. Someone is out of work for two and clearly they are a suspect. Big Brother indeed. Thanks Shion for all your help.
Photobucket
Akane was actually helpful for once....by just existing!!!!
In the end the way that Shougo was helping criminals commit their crimes actually makes sense. And takes advantage of the system already in place. Almost makes you wonder why no one thought of this before. Given how much is faked in this society having a fake huge makes sense. Like everything is computerized and holographical so stealing someone's “identity” really makes sense. The only thing you have to worry about is hanging out with other criminals. XD Or having a Dominator pick up on the CID's profiles as hello that is a super red flag.
Photobucket
Thanks.....man of the people.
In the end the first crime and the third crime might not matter. Shougo might need those drugs and bombs but in the long run his goal was just committing high level crimes in front of a large group of people. To get everyone talking and thinking that hello we really aren't safe and we have given up a lot of our freedoms for no real return. So Shougo is a pretty awful person who helps other criminals commit terrible crimes but....in the end he might be the one who really frees society. Very creepy indeed.
Photobucket
Um....it should be. It should be folks.
In conclusion Shougo is helping everyone on hammer to the head at a time, Ginoza is super emotional and a bad liar, and Akane continues to think the best in people as others tape the beating death of an innocent person. Clearly the future is not a good place according to any anime ever.

I believe Urobuchi’s focus on the "Bystander effect". According to SCAMP, the idea is, as presented here, "someone is clearly in distress but nobody helps them for whatever psychological reason. The three main ideas behind it are the inability to notice the danger happening, the inability to interpret the situation as dangerous, or the reluctance to take responsibility. It’s not that the people didn’t notice that there was an attack going on, because they all started circling around the attack and taking pictures. It’s not that they didn’t want to take responsibility, since they didn’t seem to be able to interpret that it was something they even should intervene in".

A real case:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect

The presence of others makes it actually that much more difficult to offer help in such situations. Not that i wasn’t yelling at the monitor during this scene. Like COMONE ON!! Those are NOT strawberry jam spilling out of her head!!

This ep shown the lack of reaction, and the definition of “crime”. Like RandomC said, "the word has an entry in the dictionary, but what does it truly mean? If there are no people who can clearly define a criminal act and ascribe connotation to it, what kind of impact does it have? Why is it necessary to apprehend a criminal if no one can explain what crime was committed?" According to Daddy (Tenchi, love the name you give him XD) ‘s age, like ~40-ish, which I think enough to change 2 generation’s worth of mindset, STILL it should NOT be enough for them not to realize what blood is.

According to MATTHEW:

[According to Mainichi News, Minamino Shingo, the music producer of Nitro+, was killed by a random slasher in Osaka. A 36 year old jobless man was arrested for killing Minamino and a woman. The killer deposed to the police that he was just released from the prison last month and was not acquainted with the victims. Minamino was attacked on the way to a live concert of Nitro+’s music label. The killer stabbed Minamino 20 - 30 times in the middle of the busy street in Osaka and attacked an elderly woman riding a bicycle nearby. He returned to Minamino, who fell on the street, and stabbed Minamino again straddling him]

A busy street and no one stopped it. Urobochi works at Nitro+. You can see why he might have a different opinion on people refusing to intervene. <

Like SCAMP said, “You, as a person, no matter how long you’ve been under Sibyl, should know a dead body when you f*cking see one. Sibyl doesn’t prevent death, or bleeding, or injuries.”

Hello @Christina

The beating scene was just wrong and it angered me. Even though Shougo was the villain in this show and his methods were clearly wrong, he does indeed make an interesting point of how the Sybil system turns people into slaves and not human. I guess that violent scene does highlight how the system can't protect everyone, is inherently flawed and people must learn to fend for themselves.

I read the two posts above mine.

Yeah, there's the Bystander Effect. But there's also the Citizen Arrests effect as well. In America, citizens can actually make arrests on criminals if there's enough justifications. There are different rules in different states but a citizen can still make them. Does Japan have any Citizen Arrests laws? I looked it up on wikipedia but I couldn't find anything for Japan. Which would probably explained why Gen Urobuchi wrote the hammer scene because he had a strong opinion against Japan's Bystander Effect.

Yes, you called it Christina. It's going to become more darker, bleaker, and depressing as we reach the ending--of course it will be because the writer can't write almost anything without resorting to misery! True arts is angsty my ass! I've had enough of almost every show/movie/comic on the media that tries to be "darker and edgier" for the sake of being one! I would rather enjoy my entertainment than being annoyed and/or depressed by them.

What, is Shougo going to win in the end by plunging the entire country into complete chaos by overthrowing the Sybil system? Or will Akane find a way to redeem the entire world by being magical? Knowing Urobuchi, I think we'll get a depressed ending because he hates happiness.

Why is Shinya the only detective? I was expecting Tomomi, Ginoza, and the others to be at least equally intelligent. Everyone except Shinya needs to attend detective school! Also, Akane is too naive to be realistic--some people aren't saints and deserve punishment! No, Akane, not all people are model citizens! I understand that she's the Madoka--Gen Urobuchi is the same writer for Puella Magi Madoka Magica as well as Psycho Pass--of this twisted story, but she's still part of law enforcement! She's not a magical school girl! I expect her to savvy of people!

That's all on Psycho Pass.

The cases that Wikipedia called 'notable examples' is nothing like this anime. Urobutcher has really taken things to extreme level, here. Even if they are afraid of being involved, they can at least yell "stop, I am calling the police". For god's sake, those red liquids aren't ketchup!

I expect this anime to have faster pacing from now on. Because, considering this is Urobutcher, Makishima should be able to shake the whole country by the end, right? It will be unlike him if our heroes are able to stop Makishima from going too far and sweep everything under the rug.

Anonymous- When I read about the Bystander effect in school I was so outraged as was most of my classmates. Of course we were all bright eyed and wanted to save the world and it was hard for us to wrap our minds around this madness. We all would like to think it wouldn't happen to us and I still pray if that happens around me I will react but still.....

Anonymous- I know trends in fashion and music change all the time but the mindset to change what crime I think should take longer. Unless this system has gotten everyone so brainwashed they were swept up in how lovely things appeared and didn't notice it was all a lie. While there were a lot of young people watching the hammering take place a lot of people Daddy Dearest age were also nearby. I don't know....it is hard to be the first person to say anything but at least people should have run away in fear. Even if they couldn't stop it.

Knowing that piece of information about Urobochi makes me think so many more things about this show. So while it is over the top violence maybe Urobochi is trying to change the world in the best way he knows how. That really is an important piece of information, thank you for sharing that with all of us.

Anonymous 3- I think the people are capable of being amazing or horrible. So when there is a bunch of them together they can either do a really amazing thing IE raise tons of money/supplies for victims of disasters or they riot in the streets after something offends them. I think if ONE person had tried to stop the hammering than many more people would have joined in. But no one wanted to be that one person sticking their neck out. It feels safer to have numbers on your side and until you confirm you have those numbers it is easier to wait.

Shinya is the only one to have old school detective training but I agree everyone else....it is like lala going to work so I can leave my cell so bored today.

Eternia- I think Urobochi takes something, an idea, and then takes it to the next level. Either awesome or awful or 15 kinds of awful. Like let me take a real life example, make it so awful as to not offend the real life victims but still get people thinking about the situation.

I am reminded of a video clip that I saw a while back. I believe it was in China. A toddler girl collapsed on the streets and people were walking by her for HOURS. HOURS! Sh nearly died but eventually I think someone (maybe a cop?) saved her but the amount of people who walked by was disgusting. So while people taping the hammering and doing nothing seems awful and we all agree we would do something....perhaps if we were conditioned different our reactions would be different. I hope not and maybe this extreme example is here to make sure that never happens.
