My Christmas decorating partner has given up on me XO How dare he go to bed. Its not like he went to work this morning and brought up/down all the decorations. What was he thinking?! It's the day after Thanksgiving. Clearly that means it is Christmas time duh!
Well I guess I can eat some ice cream and try to catch up on things yes? Maybe anyway. Shin Sekai Yori episode 8 time. Spoilers for most of the internet losing their mind.
Episode Summary: Two years later and all the kids have forgotten about the ugly Queerats, how the adults tried to kill them, and that they live in a lying village on the verge of a mental breakdown. No no folks love is in the air. Or at least lust. Saki and Shun have grown their hair out and have gone on to...not have relationships with each other. Instead Saki is with Maria, Satoru is with Shun, every other student is in a gay relationship at school, and Mamoru is alone. In between classes everyone is kissing and making moon eyes at each other. Except Mamoru. He is in the corner making creepy pictures of Maria with his mind. Saki and her new hair style decide to take a walk after school and she sees Shun and Satoru playing in the grass. Shun and Saki exchange a glance while he is being teased by Satoru. Saki runs off upset and finds Maria and Mamoru. Saki basically drags Maria away from Mamoru so they can play in the water and have sex. If Maria senses anything was wrong she forgets once the weird boob touching starts. Saki seems to be just going through the motions as the Fail Eevee talks about the monkeys again. School seems to be going well, with each student focusing on a specific task. Maria has the hard task of floating and Shun is trying to make an egg hatch. Maria comments on how close Satoru and Shun are which makes Saki upset.
Later on Saki is being a stalker and sees Shun breaking up with Satoru. Satoru takes it hard but Shun says some cruel things and walks off. Satoru immediately gets in a relationship with another boy to make Shun jealous. Maria is sad but says that she and Saki are forever so that is all that matters. Saki runs to the bathroom as she almost throws up at the thought. During class the teacher ushers in the head dude in the village. All the students do their best to impress him. Maria gets a nod while Satoru is verbally praised. Everyone watches to see what happens to Shun as he is the best student in the class. Only when the head dude comes close to Shun something...happens and pushes him away. The head dude leaves fast while the teacher is all sorries. After class everyone tries to talk to Shun and ask why he has the world's creepiest smile. Shun passes out and his egg breaks, revealing a monster eye inside. His friends continue to try to talk to Shun but he pushes them away. Later when Saki is walking around because that is all she ever does folks she happens upon Shun. He throws this weird stuff around him and warns her to stay away. Saki tries to confess her feelings to Shun but he is like um wait here. The adults know what happened to us two years ago and they just delayed the punishment. But now their time may be up. Shun is apparently being taken away and Shun wants Saki to tell the others what is going on. He gives her a necklace to protect her from cats and leaves with great sadness/craziness. THE END!
Well then folks. WELL THEN! I am pretty disappointed in a great number of anime fans as well as this episode. I don't even know where to begin with this hot mess of a situation. Do I start with how insane this episode made people or how insane/poor this episode was managed.
I guess I will start with how...upsetting it was reading some comments about this episode. While I know that anime fans tend to be younger and have no filters....my Lord folks. MAL especially. There were some voices of reason but a lot of I am dropping the show because of the gays, yaoi ew??! Yuri is fine but what was up with the gay stuff? All those comments are pretty hurtful. It is the year 2012. A few gay kisses and people are going to run away from this show? I am just guessing a big majority of these droppers are men. Well if us women can endure tons of animes with random fanservice that don't add ANYTHING to the episode well you can deal with these pretty innocent acts.
The thing is....why are people so shocked? Fail Eevee TOLD US this was going to happen. Or was happening. That this monkey society was copied and set in place to keep youths stress free. So....when it was finally splashed across the screen why are people wailing they need eye bleach? They were TOLD this was the case with this show. Add in the fact that there were graphs flying around depicting the relationships of these characters and I am pretty upset that the focus is not on HOW these relationships happened but that they are happening.
Obviously me and my yaoi colored glasses are gay friendly/pro gay rights. So when I find that there was something wrong with the relationships in this episode it isn't because they were gay ones. I know the Fail Eevee explained that this monkey society was going to happen. But.....it didn't state that there would ONLY be gay relationships. It explained actually that there would be basically....sex all over the place. Sex here, sex there. Sex for 14 year olds yay!!!!
But there was not one straight relationship. I didn't read the source material. Many people who are shocked by this episode didn't read the source material. So we are wondering why Saki and Shun, who clearly have feelings for each other, aren't together. Sex is one thing. The Fail Eevee told us there would be sex. But the Fail Eevee did not explain that the kids would be engineered to want to form couples. And why none of these couples would be homosexual. People on boards are stating it is a form of birth control but...where was that mentioned in the episode? Why is Mamoru left out in the cold? Why are Saki and Shun not together when they keep making glances at each other? Why was EVERY couple in the school a homosexual one when clearly Saki was about to give a blow job to Satoru to two years ago? I can see why some people are calling this random and forced if none of the couples are straight.
I know two years have passed in this story but....I just feel lost. Why are the kids not close anymore? I am assuming their seating in the classroom is based on rank. But everything just feels like a mess. Saki apparently hates herself because she knows she is using Maria. Satoru and Saki both love Shun who apparently has lost his damn mind. And Mamoru should probably be taken away by the adults because he is left out and stressed. Again I don't understand why Maria is happy with Saki when clearly Saki is looking and thinking of Shun. If these kids were engineered to have homosexual relationships until adulthood why are Saki and Shun thinking of each other? Nothing is adding up folks, for the people who haven't read the source material. Add in the fact that the gay relationships are being portrayed as something kids do and toss away later in favor of adult relationships that are straight and everyone loses. YAY!
If I need to talk about the relationships again I will say that Maria is either hiding her pain really well or is off in lala land. Satoru had a sad moment too. You could tell he was hurt and trying to be a guy about it, like it didn't matter and look at me with my new squeeze later on. Saki seems to understand that this is all forced behavior but it is doing it anyway which makes her the one causing Mamoru pain. I don't know what to think about Shun. Maybe he broke up with Satoru to protect him but maybe actually explaining that to people instead of hurting their feelings would make more sense. But when does anyone in anime make sense? Psht explaining what is going on is overrated. Best to make a big deal out of things first. How else can you be the misunderstood hero later on?
So while everyone was focused on a few gay kisses and some weird boob snuggling moment...I guess the bigger picture of WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON was overlooked. I can see how that is possible, gay kisses are powerful. But see last time we saw these kids they were told that their society was based on like 98% of the population being destroyed and ruled by a few crazies in power. That their parents, every single adult they know actually, has been lying to them about everything. That they were actually engineered, parts added to them and that their emotions might not be their own. Things like that seem more important than underage vaginas and penises touching other underage vaginas and penises.
Oh...and the most important issue of all was completely forgotten about until the last minute of the damn show. THE ADULTS WERE GOING TO KILL YOU! Like dead! Sent queerats after your ass and had your powers sealed. The adults that have taken out other kids before. But somehow...somehow...everyone, including the kids in this damn show FORGOT ABOUT THIS! Hot damn folks at least the kids in I Know What You Did Last Summer exchanged glances and what not even if they grew apart. But nothing, nothing from these kids even though this will probably be a bigger issue that gay sex.
So yes folks this is why I think the episode failed. The fact that I thought there were going to be more random hook-ups/using you to relieve tension moments rather than only homosexual relationships and the fact that the kids are pretty much adjusted to the fact they live in a messed up village full of killers. Saki was upset but I don't know if that is because she wanted Shun or because she knew she was programmed to want Maria and she knew that was causing others, including herself, hurt. Also these relationships were put in a bad light. I know people grow up and grow apart but now that people are coupled the kids don't seem to be close anymore. I would think they would have bonded over this trauma, not avoided each other. Maybe being around each other would bring up those horrible memories but HELLO those truths need to be remembered. THEY ARE HORRIBLE! REMEMBER THEM NOW!!!
So the rest of the episode. Why does this dumb school focus on teaching kids one thing? Shouldn't they train any everything? Saki and that broken piece glass. I wanted to throw the glass against the wall. Why would you want to focus on that instead of floating in the air? Or hatching an egg? I understand specialization but it looks like the weak kids will always be weak if they are stuck on the stupid tasks.
So that crazy dressed guy...what about him? He seems to be the head dude in charge of everything....But I get the feeling...just a guess....that he was there to check out Shun and Shun alone. Satoru and Maria sorry. No one cares about you two. Just Shun and his creepy smiley self making demons pop out of eggs.
Yes what was wrong with Shun? If he thought they were being watched and the adults knew about their past transgressions why would he push the limits? It appears he had a forcefield around himself which is probably a big no no. Why not lay low, tell everyone what is going on, and not hatch demon eggs? Oh wait it is best to go crazy and bring attention to yourself? I see folks.
Shun was nice enough to warn Saki and to tell her to warn the others. Now why would the adults let Shun do that instead of taking him out. Or taking all the kids out lest they infect the entire school. Now I hope that Saki actually listens to Shun because partway through that conversation and I thought she was more concerned that Shun was leaving HER instead of Shun might be leaving life and so was she. Maybe she was still blinded by yaoi kisses too. People are saying that the REAL plot starts now folks. 8 episodes in and the real plot starts now? X___X What the hell is going on with this show?!

I don't think Mamoru is "left out", he is likely choose not to have a relationship, because Maria, and keep chasing her. I feel a little sorry for that poor boy.
According to Inushinde:
>The various trials that they’re put through as their emotions mature are portrayed from several angles with a sufficient amount of depth, their collective emotional stability not helped by an environment that exudes quiet hostility from every shadow and smiling authority figure; unfortunately, it doesn’t do a great job of explaining itself. It’s a shame, because there’s a wealth of interesting topics to broach here regarding societal pressure, puberty as a whole, and same-sex relationships.<
Anonymous- I feel bad for Mamoru as Saki is knowingly hurting him and I feel bad for Satoru as Shun and Saki are knowingly hurting him too. Well maybe not so much Saki. It just seems to be that being with the person you want to be with would cause less stress in your life. That would still mean that Mamoru, Maria, and Satoru wouldn't be happy but it would be best to know that it wasn't happening. But I think in Mamoru's mind Maria being with Saki is a stage and perhaps Saki thinks that too.
I think a LOT of subjects and topics are only touched upon in this series. Not much has been explained yet people keep saying well in the source material. Like I am watching the show, I should learn this from the show. Fail Eevee said free love/monkey like society. Not OH in high school you all have to be in homosexual relationships to release stress.
It was hot as hell !!!
*__*!!!
loved every second of episode 8 :D
sara- I think this show focused too much on "couples" when really...the kids were getting it on with other kids too. But I guess the hotness factor comes from the kids who were in love with the other? I don't know, Satoru's enthusiasm was hot to say the least.
why couldn't Saki love Maria and we'd all be happy here?!
and Shun should have never broken it off with Satoru!
Anonymous- Because Saki rather get love from someone who gives her glances than undivided attention. Both Satoru and Maria should have their partner for not...paying attention to them. Of course this was all conditioning and none of the same sex pairing were going to work out ANYWAY....except in Satoru's mind. It was all just a hot mess of this is what I am programmed to do and this is what I want to do and oh yeah we know all the adults are crazy. Maybe they should have forced Mamoru into a pairing before....
