Zetsuen no Tempest episode 2

Hello there my lovely readers! As you can see I have been trying to catch up on all the comments left on various posts. Such a slacker indeed. Only a few more left and I will be completely caught up. I would promise not to fall behind again but I think I did that once and obviously things went special. XD But I shall try!

A lot of flashbacks for this series yes?
But now it is time for more anime! Up now is Zetsuen no Tempest episode is up. Spoilers for boys having emotional problems but hiding them well.

You don't get kisses until your 30!
Episode Summary: A flashback of happier times between Mahiro, Yoshino and Aika are shown. Aika asks Mahiro how kisses feel. Yoshino comments he never has been kissed while Mahiro is like you aren’t a woman so don’t ask me these questions. Aika pretend to be mean to Yoshino but texts him saying they should kiss tomorrow. In the present Mahiro has walked away from the giant…thing in the sky and has taken up kicking vending machines. Yoshino decide he wants to talk to Hakaze again about what is going on. Basically her family the Kusaribe clan is a powerful mage family and a massive rift between her brother Samon and her occurred. She was banished to the island and Samon began the process of summoning up an ancient giant tree that has the potential to destroy the world. The large thing that appeared off shore is a piece of this giant tree. All over the world they are gathering together to form the big tree. Butterflies are a sign that a piece of the giant tree is being summoned nearby and as a result the black iron syndrome will take place. Yoshino declares this all insane and Hakaze and Mahiro argue back and forth over who needs who more. Mahiro decides it is time to go to his old house as this area will be sealed off soon. They arrive at the huge mansion and Yoshino is given the key to go inside. Hakaze needs Mahiro to use some of her talismans inside the crime scene to help find the killer. Yoshino has a moment of sadness being inside the place that Aika died in but turns his focus back on the magic Mahiro is using. Before Hakaze was sealed away she hid items containing the potential to use magic. Once Hakaze says the words they are useable for a short amount of time. Mahiro starts the spell to find Aika’s killer and reminds Yoshino that is the only reason why he is helping to save the world is to find Aika’s killer. Mahiro wishes Yoshino good luck and gives him a few talismans. He tells Yoshino to get on to the girlfriend and that he (Mahiro) will return one day.

And maybe you are trying to stop this because ruling a world with no people is boring?
Yoshino leaves as Mahiro waits for the spell to take hold. Yoshino sits and thinks about how there is no girlfriend to go back to as Aika is dead. He takes a moment to be sad about the dead people around him as they have broken promises in their lives. He stops by at home to pick up some things and attempts to call his parents. He finds the kids who stole his wallet and Evangeline. The wallet does not threaten his life. Evangeline tries getting some answers out of Yoshino but he uses his talismans to get away. He decides to hide in the school where he sees dead classmates. Evangeline eventually makes her way to the school and there is a bit of cat and mouse going on. Yoshino eventually gets the upper hand but spares Evangeline’s life. Evangeline questions why Yoshino would even help Mahiro and Yoshino basically explains that Aika was his girlfriend. Evangeline and her lady parts are touched by this Notebook/Titanic love story and for some reason the two form a brief alliance. Yoshino explains in a dramatic fashion that he loved Aika more than her brother but knows revenge is not the answer. Somewhere else in town Mahiro is trying to leave as the spell has been complete. Hakaze seems very shocked with the results of the spell while Yoshino is smirking and acting more bizarre than usual. Suddenly a dude carrying a spear appears and is able to use magic. Hakaze says that the person is Natsumura and Mahiro should not take him on in battle. So naturally Mahiro starts fighting Natsumura. Yoshino muses to Evangeline that he can’t possibly leave Mahiro’s side, probably because Mahiro would destroy the world if it would find his sister’s killer. THE END!

If this is fruit I am sticking to ice cream!
Fruit? Did he really call that thing in the sky fruit? Is this a weird translation or are the Japanese nuts? Because my fruit doesn’t have crazy eyes all over the place trying to kill me. But that is just my fruit. Maybe this is normal fruit in Japan and maybe that is why real watermelon over in that island nation costs 20 dollars for a tiny one. But if that is FRUIT I hate to see the tree. And that is what I took away from this episode.

The extent of Yoshino having emotions.
I do think that Yoshino has emotional problems though. He did show some reaction walking in the house. Like he was holding back his true emotions when thinking about Aika. Probably doesn’t help that Mahiro says all the time that Yoshino doesn’t care about Aika being dead. Even if they didn’t like each other I am sure Yoshino would still care that his best friend lost his sister in such a violent manner. So yes Yoshino had a moment where he had to hold back his tears. But other than that…yep just walking around the city full of dead people. I didn’t think he was going to have a Yuuki from Mirai Nikki moment but I thought maybe he would be slightly upset. Maybe avoiding being near them. Nope. So…yeah he is special.
Photobucket
This is not confusing! Go watch some other animes if you want confusing!
I thought the conversation between Yoshino and Hakaze explaining everything in detail was a bit…much. Like maybe some other shows could explain what the hell is going on but with this show I thought things were explained pretty well in episode 1. Well maybe not everything since I was promised mayhem and twists. But brother sent mage sister to an island, brother is trying to take over the world via demon tree, Mahiro wants to find sister’s killer, and people are getting turned into rocks. We get it. But at least Yoshino acknowledges that this is insane and wants some more clarification.
Photobucket
And you handed it to him because....you didn't want to be the one to do it or you COULDN'T be the one to do it?
The first thing that caught my eye in this episode was how Mahiro handed Yoshino the keys to the house. Why did Mahiro do that? Am I just seeing things that aren’t there, trying to pick up on nonimportant details because I am promised twists and turns? So yes. That little moment I picked up on for some reason. Was Mahiro trying not to leave clues behind? If so he would have been wearing clothes. Is Mahiro a ghost or something, a thing that cannot open a door if they are “banished”? All the theories in my head are driving me crazy. What is going with Mahiro handing Yoshino the keys to the house? Was it Mahiro trying to hide his hurt or was there something more?
Photobucket
I think they are going to need more than that though. X___X
So while Yoshino was busy trying to hold back his tears about Aika Mahiro was explaining why he could use magic. Which I was kinda wondering. Because Hakaze IS trapped on an island. So how can Mahiro be doing all these magical things? Well it turns out that before Hakaze got sent packing she made sure to have some back up magical talismans. Good thing that her bottle reached shore. I don’t know if I should chalk this up to anime magic or not but I guess it makes sense. At least it makes sorta sense.
Photobucket
Oh yeah....my girlfriend...
I thought Mahiro was going to ask Yoshino for help…but he didn’t. And then I thought that Yoshino was going to offer to help….but he didn’t. Maybe I don’t understand boys. I thought they were better friends than that. And even if Yoshino didn’t believe in the revenge part of the plan I thought maybe he tag along to make sure Mahiro lived. Also where the hell is Yoshino supposed to go? I am sure he would be questioned and targeted being the only person to leave the area alive. I just thought it was weird. But it did seem that Mahiro was trying to get Yoshino to tell him the truth. Like oh make sure you get back to your GIRLFRIEND really fast right?! RIGHT?! RIGHT??!?!?!?!? So maybe Yoshino ran because he didn’t want to tell the truth and Mahiro let him because all he wanted was the truth.
Photobucket
Good job Evangeline!
Yoshino made it about two feet and found his stolen wallet before he was in danger. Enter Evangeline! Okay maybe Yoshino went home and did various things beforehand. Instead of going to Mahiro’s home Evangeline decides to take to the streets and look for either boy. Not a smart move but I guess it worked. Good thing Mahiro cared enough to give Yoshino some talismans. I do think that using magic came too easy for Yoshino. While it was probably a basic spell I would have liked to see him have problems or issues. But since he was able to use magic just fine and do some hand to hand stuff with the gun…I might agree with Evangeline and think that there is way more to Yoshino than a normal school boy. Why is Yoshino so amazing?
Photobucket
The saddest story ever, surely I am on your side!
I wish Evangeline was still “the baddie”. Or the misunderstood baddie. I thought maybe if she knew the truth, that this nasty tree is causing all the problems, not Mahiro, she would stop attacking the boy. But instead she hears some sob story about Yoshino losing his girlfriend and an alliance is born? Super confused folks. I understand why Yoshino decided to help Mahiro but not Evangeline.
Photobucket
This got me going OH I SEE!!!!
Important issue number two of this episode was the rests of the Aika Killer. It was never stated who killed her but Mahiro had a WEIRD look on his face, like a crazy look while Hakaze sounded frantic. Like she was trying to explain why this makes no sense. Now let me see folks. Hakaze can’t use magic on this island because she doesn’t have the resources she usually has. We don’t know for sure that Hakaze is the lesser of two evils. So…what if Hakaze can only use magic if she sacrifices humans? AKA Aika? Yeah that might make things….special. Because Hakaze sounded confused on how this could have happened if she has been locked away during the time period. So was Hakaze trying to explain it wasn’t her and it might be Samon? Yeah Mahiro and Hakaze reacting weird to the situation and it made my little detective ears go up.
Photobucket
....Such a convincing face...
The episode ended with Mahiro going to battle against Natsumura. Hakaze warned him not to do so but Mahiro appears to be upset at the news about the killer. He is like WOOHOO time to fight. Natsumura seems to be there to find out what is happening with the town after the fruit appears. Insert a few lines from Shakespeare and it is time to call it a day. See folks? Do I understand the whole truth on what is going on with this series? Nope. But it is still enjoyable to watch without being boring, slow, or leaving me pulling my hair out. Take note other animes.

I'm going to be a bit realistic to this show. There should be an organization that polices criminal mages or dangerous supernatural events. Look how many people have died in this episode! I'm damn sure the entire world knows about this massacre via internet-I doubt the Japanese government could censor the entire internet.

Back to the police organization, naturally normal people would fear and hate these mages because of their incredible powers. It happened in X-Men, Dragon Age I /II, Marvel Universe, Witch Hunter Robin, and countless fictions with super powered beings. As such, they would form an organization to police dangerous mages, because there would be mages that would abuse their powers for selfish/nefarious reasons. And I'm thinking that mages have something to do with the apocalypse tree.

So, where is the anti-magic police force in this story? The show makes it seems that people are aware that mages exist, with the way Mahiro casually mentions he is a mage and that Yoshino easily accepts it. Again, look how many people have died in this event. This massacre would just fuel the hatred and fear of normal people toward mages. That is realistically what would happen if people know about mages, and as a consequence, the normal people would form an anti-magic police force. Which would then realistically leads to suppression of mages, and in turn, the mages would rebel against their suppressors leading to a global war/witch hunt. Ugh, I sound like the story from Dragon Age 2.

First anonymous here again.

Forgot to add.

I'm guessing that Aika will come back to life somehow. I know there are people who have read the manga that would strongly disagree with me, but please no spoilers for people going by the show only.

Evangeline helped Yoshino due to a deal (more explanation later on in the eps).
Hint: she work as a volunteer for the gov.

Mahiro did not touch open the door himself because he does not want to leave trace (fingerprints) of himself, especially he is technically "on the run", and there are people "tailing" him.

According to sekijitsu.com
>In the play, it was Hamlet’s lack of action that escalated his problems. If he had just stabbed Claudius when he had the chance, then his mommy would still be alive and he’d be alive ruling Denmark. Perhaps Hamlet’s inaction is represented by the one year span after Aika’s death.<

Also, Mahiro is more like Laertes than Hamlet, if Aika is Ophelia. Mahiro actually quoted him this week: “I loved Opehlia/Aika. Forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my sum.”

--Hamlet, Act 5, Scene i

Still the 2nd Anonymous,
Correction:
It was actually Hamlet who say that, not Laertes.
So yes, I should say, Mahiro is very much like Hamlet.

Anonymous- I think Yoshino believes everything. That or his emotions are set at "oh". So I am not sure we can learn anything from Yoshino's reactions. Maybe normal people don't know about mages and most would freak out. Unlike Yoshino who is walking around in a town full of dead people going "oh".

But yes the government obviously needs to be doing something more than sending one volunteer into the zone and then blowing up the bridges covering it up. Not sure how I would accept that explanation if my family member lived in a quarantined zone. I have a hard time believing the government can cover this all up without the use of magic themselves. Or...if they are in on it too and the Doom Tree isn't such doom and gloom. Or maybe they are letting a few people die knowing it could be much worse.

I am starting to doubt homegirl even died. Maybe they just THINK she died and she has a big part to play in this Doom Tree revival.

Anonymous 2- I think Mahiro might have been overly cautious. I don't think he was planning on staying in town long anyway plus he had already been seen. So...I was hoping it was more like COULDN'T touch the door. Hakaze did mention something about a soul. But I guess boring and logical answers make sense too. XD

Hamlet was a hot mess. He acted like he had to watch Black Rock Shooter every day in his childhood and the Bird of Many Dead Colors scarred him for life.
